Bytewise Brigns you Moth beans which are drought-resistant legume, commonly grown in arid and semi-arid regions of India. It is commonly called mat bean, matki bean, matki, Turkish gram or dew bean, cultivated in many other parts of Asia, as well as Australia and the US.

Moth beans are small elongated beans with brown skin and a brownish-yellow interior, with a nutty flavor and a strong earthly smell

Culinary usage


  • Drain the water, rinse beans and soak in fresh water for 4 hour.
  • Place beans/legumes in the pressure cooker.
  • Add 3 cups (750 ml) of water for each 1 cup (250 ml) of beans/legumes.
  • The matki dal generally take about 10-15 minutes to get cooked in a covered pan (Foam may form during the first few minutes of cooking, which can simply be skimmed off.)and 4-5 minutes in a pressure cooker.


One of the nicest things about moth beans is they are highly versatile as superfoods.
In places where they are native to, they are fried and consumed as snack.
They also make for excellent vegetables when boiled.
Moth beans may be sprouted and added to all sorts of vegetable dishes,
They can be turned into flour, too.
